What’s to Love About Summer in Tokyo?

i love you shibuya
The heat has kicked in, the air conditioners are cranked up inside sending the inner city temperatures soaring. Sweat is pouring, nights are sticky so what is there to love about Summer in Tokyo?

For me Summer is the ultimate season in Tokyo, it is like the city really comes alive. The heat turns everything up. So I thought I would try to paint a picture in point form of summer of in this city.

  • Paper fans fluttering
  • Lanterns swaying in the warm breeze
  • Japanese geta clip clopping on the sidewalks
  • Edamame in bamboo baskets with icy cold drinks
  • Summer sales
  • Hanabi (fireworks with friends in the park)
  • The sound of semi (cicadas) in the trees.
  • Matsuri (street festivals)
  • Summer parties in the park
  • Rooftop beer gardens
  • Watermelon
  • Watermelon flavored everything.
  • Cold drinks from street vendors.
  • Kakigori (shaved ice with a diverse range of toppings)
  • Yukata and jimbe
  • Naps on tatami mats
  • Fuurin tinkling all over the city
  • Long bike rides, holding hands
  • Momo
  • Tombo San
  • Hachi maki
  • Ice cold cucumber with ginger, mirin and shoyu
  • Zaru soba

Of course there is so much more. I would love to hear your Tokyo loves in the summer time.
